STROKE RISK!: Sugary Drinks Increase Heart Attack

Sipping on a sugary soda while reading this? If so, you may want to put it down. While you may know that sweetened drinks may do a number on your weight, did you know that drinking them regularly can also up your chances of having a heart attack or stroke?

A review of studies from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health looked at the risk of fructose, an added sugar that is mainly consumed in sugar-sweetened drinks, on heart health. The evidence they collected is alarming. One large study found that people who drank two or more servings of sweet beverages a day had a 35% higher risk of developing heart disease. And people who drank at least one serving each day had a 16% greater chance of stroke, compared to those who had none.

“These results do not surprise me at all,” says integrative medicine physician Robin Miller, MD. For one thing, sugar calories provide no nutrients and contribute to weight gain and even obesity. This alone puts you at a greater risk for heart problems.

But the fructose in sugary sodas adds another layer to the problem. “For years we have known about the risks of fructose-sweetened drinks,” says Miller. Fructose is dangerous to the heart because of the way the body metabolizes it — in the liver. This can cause fatty liver disease, higher triglyceride levels (fat in your blood) and insulin resistance. “I urge all my patients to stop drinking them,” says Miller.

And while it may not be a surprise that excess sugar can contribute to diabetes, the research showed that people who had one or two sweet drinks a day also had a 26% increased chance of developing it.

Authors of the study also noted that carbonated sweet sodas aren’t the only drinks that contribute to heart, stroke and diabetes risk – so do all drinks with added sugar. This includes your favorite sports drinks, sweet teas and many fruit juices. It doesn’t include diet drinks containing artificial sweeteners, but those have their own concerns.

Want to keep your heart in tip-top shape? Obviously you should stop with the soda habit, and Dr. Miller suggests you don’t take your time doing so. “I usually advise the cold-turkey method,” she says. “It is better to just cut it out rather than taper it off.”

But if you can’t convince your loved one — or yourself — to go cold turkey, Dr. Miller says to lower your intake by a drink per day until you’re totally off it, and replace those lost fluids with good old-fashioned water. If that sounds too boring, “flavor the water with real fruit,” she says.

10 Extreme Ways Women Hid Imperfections In History

We’ve all battled with the idea of our imperfections, whether we’re in 2017 or 1017. Women throughout centuries have been finding clever ways to mask, side step, or altogether alter their imperfections with the help of cosmetics and contraptions. Some of them were smart, some of them dangerous, and more than a few downright weird. Ahead are the weird ways women hid imperfections through history – would you have tried any of them?

1. They Used Chokers To Hide Scars
Queen Alexandra of Denmark, the queen who followed Victoria, had a penchant for wide, diamond-filled choker necklaces. While the look might have been customary for a royal, it was said that she specifically loved the style because it had a purpose: She had a scar going down her neck from a thyroid surgery, and the wide necklaces helped hide it.

Talk about a million dollar solution.

2. They Tried Scar Patches
In the 1700s, women that survived smallpox were usually left with telltale scars all over their faces and bodies, leaving them marked. In order to hide the small blemishes, fashion patches came into vogue, where people wore small stickers in the shapes of circles, hearts, crescent moons, and stars. They would stick them over their scars and decorate their face, cleavage, and shoulders with them, turning their blemishes into fashion statements.

3. They Dabbled With Eyelash Surgery
If a woman thought her lashes were lackluster but didn’t want to go through the social stigma of wearing mascara (cosmetics were a huge taboo for Victorian ladies,) then she could try corrective eyelash extensions.

The way the procedure worked was that the doctor would numb the eyelid with cocaine, pluck a hair from the lady’s head, thread it through a needle, and then thread it through her eyelid.

I would much rather have thin, short lashes, but that’s just me.

4. They Fashioned Fake Unibrows
In Ancient Greek, it was seen as very beautiful for a woman to have a unibrow – it was striking and signified intelligence, so many women hoped that their arches would connect. For those who lacked the characteristic, they would try and fashion a fuzzy patch out of goat’s hair and tree resin as a kind of toupee.
5. They Turned To Rats For Over Tweezed Brows
While it was very in vogue during the Middle Ages to tweeze out your eyelashes, eyebrows, and hairline in order to look “innocent and pure,” some women grew their brows back after a while. Some found that during the grow out process they grew sparsely and in patches, and in order to avoid that awkward look they made eyebrow wigs out of rodent fur. These ladies were essentially wearing rat fur on their faces – ick!
6. They Wore The Hair Of People In Hell
The Middle Ages had a vendetta against anything that could be considered vain – from makeup to hair trinkets – and that included hair extensions. Some women liked to buy extensions so they could create more elaborate hair-dos, but priests warned during their sermons that these women were using the hair of people enjoying eternal damnation in purgatory and or hell. That was one way to scare a woman from buying some pricey locks.
7. They Stuffed Satchels Underneath Armpits To Hide B.O.
People during the Middle Ages didn’t bathe very often, averaging around once a month. The church thought it was sinful to be naked and discouraged believers from appearing in the tub in the nude too often. Because of that, women had to get creative when it came to their smell. A popular work-around was to stuff small satchels of spices in strategic places – like underneath their armpits and in the bosom – to keep things semi-fresh.
8. They Used Blood Of The Bull For Freckles
Any kind of freckle or blemish during the Medieval era was risky business, since churchgoers believed those were marks left by the devil when he came into direct contact with a woman. In an attempt not to illicit a witch hunt, women had many beauty recipes and remedies to bleach away any kind of freckles or marks. One such remedy involved the blood of a bull. It was thought that if one applied the blood of a bull or rabbit on their face like a soothing face mask, those blemishes would disappear. Whether that worked is uncertain, but it does sound downright terrifying.
9. They Applied Makeup To Curb The Plague
While most of beauty history is full of women trying to appear paler than they actually were, in the 17th-century we saw a blimp where darker hues were more in vogue thanks to the circumstances in Europe. It was during the time of the plague, and women used darker makeup to hide their pasty pallor that was linked to hiding indoors to avoid the disease. If you looked somewhat sun-kissed, it symbolically distanced you from the illness and the fear.
10. They Fixed Tans In The Middle Ages
Being sun-kissed wasn’t the look a noblewoman wanted in the 6th-century, and like any true beauty lover knew, there was always a work around when it came to achieving perfection. If a woman felt like she wasn’t pale enough during that time, she would simply bleed herself so her complexion paled. I mean, that was hardcore.

OMG! Fashion Bloggers Over 40!

The biggest flaw in the fashion industry is its lack of inclusiveness—its long driven message that you must look a certain way and be a (under) a certain age in order to be stylish and beautiful. Fortunately, there are trailblazers who have been shaking up this harmful notion.

Among them are a growing group of fashion bloggers who refuse to leave the fun to to the 20-somethings. From their 40s to their 80s, these women are daring to combat our youth-centric society by just being their fabulous—and crazy chic—selves. Isn’t it amazing when women can inspire you by simply being who they are? Whatever your age, you’re going to want to give these ladies a follow.

How To Ensure Healthy Kissable Lips All Year Long

Our lips are an invaluable resource at conveying emotion and helping us to be our most confident; scientists have even proven that the size and composition of our lips has a direct relationship with how attractive we’re deemed to be. Having a healthy, radiant, powerful pout can mean the difference between feeling on top of the world and feeling like you’d rather stay in bed – that’s why we’re collectively so obsessed with the power of a great red lipstick! However, it’s easy to become complacent when it comes to your lips (and neglect them in favour of anything from your under-eye circles to your cuticles,) as we don’t often notice there’s an issue until it’s too late. Whether that’s dryness, irritation, lack of plumpness (or god forbid a cold sore!) by the time our bodies tell us some things up we’re forced to go into full-on war room mode; so what if there were things you could do to make a long-term difference, ensuring your pout was always preened and perfect? Here are five of my top tips to ensure your lips are healthy and kissable all year long.

TO PREVENT COLD SORES
I’ve experienced my fair share of cold sores over the years and they’re never fun. Once they’ve appeared they leave your lips uncomfortable, sore, crusty and visually a little bit bleugh – and most importantly, they prevent you from applying the products you want to use. Cold sores can zap your confidence and leave you wanting to hide away, but thankfully we can find lip products that can help like carmax or some other medicated lip products. Applying a small amount around the edge of lips both morning and night can help prevent the appearance of cold sores, even up to that first tingle. The HSV1 virus that causes cold sores reactivates by sending signals between particles to ‘wake-up’ and start replicating so they can spread. Clever eh? Put it by your toothbrush so you remember to apply every time you brush your teeth!

USE A SOOTHING LIP BALM
Many of the lipglosses and lipsticks we use are enriched with ingredients that can irritate or dry out the surface of lips; if you’ve ever applied a red lipstick multiple times in one day, you’ll be very familiar with the sensation! Investing in a great lip balm that will help replenish lost moisture and inject goodness into the skin (through ingredients such as Vitamin E, coconut oil, beeswax or shea butter) will ensure you’ve always got a helping hand at your side. Drop one in your bag and on your desk so you can top up throughout the day.

BUFF THOSE LIPS ONCE A WEEK
Exfoliating away a build-up of dry and dead skin cells will help rejuvenate the skin beneath, while encouraging blood to rise to the surface (providing a more youthful and plump appearance.) Whether you want to make your own scrub with a touch of sugar and coconut oil, or opt for a store-bought version, make sure you buff the formula gently over lips once a week (or after you’ve been wearing lipstick) to leave your pout feeling fresh and smooth. Finish off with a bit of balm to soothe.

TREAT & PAMPER OVERNIGHT

Just like with our skin, our lips can benefit from a little overnight pampering. While our bodies are in ‘go slow’ mode they can focus more on repair, putting products to work effectively so you awake rejuvenated. Apply either a thick layer of your usual lip balm or moisturiser before bed, so it can work to soothe and hydrate as you sleep; if you’re a regular lipstick wearer then this is also the perfect way to ensure your lips are always the perfect blank canvas ready to be painted.

INVEST IN A HUMIDIFIER

Rather surprisingly, dry air can also dry out your lips – especially in the winter when the air can be dryer and our lips are exposed to cold winds. Investing in a humidifier to place in rooms where you spend a lot of time (such as your living room or bedroom) will help to infuse more moisture into the air; turning it on while you sleep will boost the performance of your products, while ensuring the delicate top layers are plumped full of moisture. I’ve had one of these in my bedroom for around a year and it’s definitely helped prevent dryness and left my skin feeling so soft and plump.

Although it’s a little late for resolutions, I’m definitely going to try and treat my lips a little kinder throughout 2017. One of my best friends suffers from horrendous cold sores and self confidence issues when they erupt, so I’m passing on my tips (along with a few tubes of my favorite lip balm) to see if it helps. Nobody should have to suffer with dry, irritated or sore lips – but luckily help is at hand, in your bag, in your pocket, and on the night stand, at your desk, ext!

The Best Asian Beauty Products You Need To Try

Thanks to an array of cute and functional products, the Asian beauty industry is the biggest in the world. I’ve got my hands on some of the biggest exports to see what all the fuss is about.

Three Step Pore Minimiser

Each step gets you closer to airbrushed skin.
Step one is a deep clean, step two is similar to pore strips, and step three is an even deeper clean.
The combination of these three steps really does remove dirt and oils from the pores which would make it idea for use before a big event, but I do think in the long run, it’s better suited to Asian skin types, as my skin couldn’t take this amount of harsh cleansing too often.

Natural Tooth Whitening Powder

Who doesn’t dream of a whiter smile?
While most whitening products are either too abrasive, or contains harsh chemicals, I was delighted by this natural alternative.
Made from dried coconut powder, it gently buffs away stains and left my teeth feeling cleaner than ever before.

Collagen Jelly Face Mask

I love deep moisturising masks, but unlike some which need to be removed from the skin, this doesn’t! In fact, I’ve seen better results when I’ve let this Milky Piggy Mask sit on my face overnight.
It’s jelly-like texture melts into the skin, so it’s a good idea to apply a thick layer to really deliver a much moisture as possible.

Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Rich in hyaluronic acid, Wonder Essence is ideal for skin which needs a little more moisture.
Used immediately after cleaning the skin, it can hold up to 1000 times it’s one weight in moisture!
I like to apply this before my usual day or night creams to instantly plump skin.

Collagen Lip Balm

The delicate lip area doesn’t product it’s own moisturising oils, so it’s extra important to give your lips the goodness they need.
This collagen lip balm is one of the best I’ve ever used! It’s non-greasy and leaves no shine, just hydrates and plumps lips.

Moisturising Black Sheet Mask

Sheet masks are big business in Asian, and in Koran specifically there’s store after store selling nothing but face masks!
This is one of my favourites, not only because it’s jet black, but because it really works! Full of anti-aging ingredients, it brightens, plumps, and smoothes skin in one 10 minutes use.

Black Peel-Off Mask

The no iconic Black Peel Off Mask has taken the world by store, but it’s been big business in Asian for a few years already.
This is another product which looks great, but really is more suited to Asian skin types.
I find the peeling effect to be too damaging to my skin, and would rather focus on deep cleansing than tearing skin and damaging capillaries.
If you have oily skin or enlarged pores, it’s worth a try, just use once or twice a week as excessive use could lead to skin damage.

Can LED Light Really Lead To Better Skin?

While getting a facial last year, my aesthetician introduced me to Colour Light Therapy – UV-free LED light which is clinically proven to treat acne and increase collagen production.
To say I was dubious of the potential results was an understatement.
My first thought was “I sit under LED bulbs in my home every single day, so why isn’t my skin already glowing?”.
Out of the 90 minute facial, 50 minutes was spent under the LED lamp, and I was pleased with the results, although I did feel that was down to the other 40 minutes.
However, after talking to some avid fans of LED Light Therapy, I decided to splash out on my very own LED mask to see if I could achieve all the promised benefits.

Each colour works in a different way:

Red: skin rejuvenation and spot removal.
Blue: deep sterilisation and helps balance oil production
Green: stimulates lymph drainage
Yellow: energises the skin cells and promotes collagen production
Purple: combines the benefits of blue and red light
White: improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

For the past six months, I’ve used this mask for 20-30 minutes daily with a combination of different colour lights, allowing me to enjoy all the benefits.
It did takes around 8 weeks to first notice a reduction in blemishes and minimised pores. After 12 weeks there was rescued puffiness around the eye area, and less redness in my cheeks.
After  months there’s now a huge difference in my complexion – skin is so much brighter, and I haven’t suffered breakouts in weeks.

As the LED chips are encased behind plastic, the mask is wipe-clean, allowing it to be used alongside other topical products.
I’ve recently been applying pure hyaluronic acid to cleansed skin, allowing it to soak into the skin with 10 minutes of yellow light, followed immediately be another 10 minutes of purple light.
I think this is the best combination for me skin, and adding a little product into the regime has only enhanced the results.

This type of skin therapy is 100% painless with no side effects.
LED chips don’t even produce that much heat, so the mask doesn’t even warm up. There’s no harmful UV rays, so no skin damage, and there’s no need to worry that a new product may “shock” your skin if you’re already comfortable with your current skincare range.

If you’re thinking about trying LED therapy, it’s important to remember that you don’t see instant results.
While these types of masks are fairly inexpensive, it’s all about investing time and experimenting with the colour combinations to find something that suits for skin type.

When it comes to being a savvy makeup artist, the big secret is: it’s all in the kit. Like your portfolio, your makeup kit is constantly evolving, expanding, changing, and what you have or don’t have in your kit can separate an expert from an amateur. Sometimes the hardest reality of putting together the perfect group of products is letting go of personal favorites and instead focusing on those practical essentials with time-tested benefits, versatility, and value.

Whether you want to work as a professional makeup artist or just put together a complete collection for yourself, an understanding of the industry’s processes and procedures will help you develop and maintain your kit like the leading artists. In this exclusive series for Beautylish, I’m sharing some of my best kit-building insights from 17+ years of experience in the business. Let’s build the best kit together!

Getting Started: Think Big!

Building your kit is an exercise in decision-making. Before you even think about buying product, you need to ask some larger questions about your artistry: What kind of makeup will you need for the jobs you’re working? How will you carry this makeup and organize it on set? How will it travel?

There are a lot of concerns to face all at once, but just relax and let your mind think through your kit creatively. It takes time, resources, and planning to create a master collection of artistry staples you can always depend on. While complete starter kits are available for purchase, I believe the ability to get your own custom gear together allows you to work as a true professional.

You’ll undeniably need to assemble a selection of various products, pigments, tones, textures, and tools, but it’s not about buying every eye shadow or lip pencil available. My most important rule: only buy what you know will have the versatility and durability you need. Once you have this set of basics, you can then learn to edit and refine for each job—bridal, editorial, HD or FX, etc.

It’s important to think about your clients, too. What are the specific demands of shoots and locations? How about direction or themes your clients are aiming for—do you have the products to achieve them? Do you really have what you need to design, apply, and maintain this particular makeup?

Putting together a kit plan might take you a day or even a few months, but a huge investment like this is no joke. To help brainstorm various scenarios and answer the above questions, get a designated kit notebook. Draw your fantasy bag. List your dream career and goals. Write down 10 new products you’re excited to test out. Your kit is a reflection of your artist self—think big and ambitiously about your potential and the products that can help make that happen. And when you’re ready, let’s dive in.

Ready to get started? Stay tuned for Part 2: It’s in the Bag!
